Mercado Artesanal Mexicano, Coyoacán

The Mercado Artesanal Mexicano is a major artisan market. After a day spent strolling the Historic Center of Coyoacán, it’s a must stop. As a public market, you will find some of the same features of more traditional Coyoacán markets. That includes some very nice places to eat. But here, emphasis is definitely on the hand crafted, souvenirs, and even some real works of art.

For those shopping for friends and loved ones back home, you really can’t go wrong. A 2017 UAM study of all public markets in Mexico City counted no fewer than 457 merchants here. That makes it pretty easily the biggest in Coyoacán. The number of dealers will vary, of course. Some of the work is seasonal. Some just depends on what’s being produced and when and where. That’s all part of the charm. And inventory will change just as drastically – at least for some of the best merchandise.

Tried and true souvenirs may always be on hand. But unique embroidery, art pieces, and one-of-a-kind gifts, it’s part of the fun. The fact that it’s open late gives you a good excuse to stay late too. And don’t think of it as shopping. In fact, a trip to Coyoacán’s Mercado Artesanal Mexicano is solid exploration, and may end up being the highlight to your whole stay.
