Metro Plaza Aragón is the penultimate station on Metro Line B. The station is on the border between the Ecatepec colonias of Ciudad y Puerto and Ignacio Allende. Like all of the stations on the section of the line, it’s on the Avenida Central, or the Avenida Carlos Hank González.
The station logo depicts an old tianguis stall. This is appropriate as the station is named for the giant Plaza Aragón shopping center. It also recalls the long tradition of ancient Ecatepec, It was an important trading post for the Mexica people of Tenochtitlan and for those who ran the ancient market at Tlatelolco.
Today the shopping center is renamed the Multiplaza Aragón. It’s been one of the busiest shopping malls in the country since it opened in the 1970s. Nearly 300 different retail outlets call the plaza home. According to the management website, it’s visited by some 3.2 million people every month. The same management company operates some 40 shopping centers under the “Multiplaza” name around Mexico.
Just north of the Metro Plaza Aragón station is the Niño flautista monument. The Child Flutist is one of the finest on the Avenida Central, and stands directly outside the southwestern corner of the shopping center.
