The Mercado Constituyentes de 1917 is the neighborhood market for the colonia Constitución de 1917. It’s the neighborhood most famous for the Metro station of the same name. It’s an important center for transfers to other modes of transport, mostly buses, but now including the new Line 2 of the Cablebus System.
That’s sure to be an important point for international visitors. Depending on whether you’re coming or going, the market can be a handy place to know in the neighborhood.
The constitution for which the neighborhood is named is explored in some detail in the Museum of the Constitutions in the City Center. The market, though, is named for the constituents who actually signed and ratified the document.
A 2017 UAM study counted some 180 vendors inside the Mercado de Constituyentes de 1917. That number can vary, but it shows that it is one of the larger of the 69 public markets in Iztapalapa. Among all those vendors, a good handful are preparing fresh food for sit-down eating. It’s a great place for lunch. You get much fresher food than is available in restaurants. And it’s healthier than what you’re likely to get on the streets.
The market is about five minutes walk north of the Metro, Trolebús, and Cablebús stations.
