Casa de Cultura Raúl Anguiano

The Casa de Cultura Raúl Anguiano is one of the most important points within the Huayamilpas Ecological Park. Beloved by residents of all the neighboring communities, it’s the focal point for most activities within the park and often the staging ground for performances within the nearby Foro Enrique Alonso.

The center boasts extensive facilities. Among the screening rooms, theaters, and workshop areas are a couple of galleries, one of which is dedicated just to the work of Raúl Anguiano. The Casa also houses a very large mural created for the site, and one of the final works created during the artist’s lifetime.

  • José Raúl Anguiano Valadez (1915–2006), was a painter, muralist, and printmaker.  Born in Guadalajara, he was one of the founding members of the Salón de la Plástica Mexicana, and taught for decades in nearly all Mexico City institutions. His participation in the founding of the Taller de Gráfica Popular (Popular Graphics Workshop) also had a lasting impact on Mexican culture. Often called “the last muralist,” his work was deeply influential across much of Latin America.

The Casa de Cultura Raúl Anguiano was inspired by architect Fernando Rosemberg. Construction on the building began in 1993, under the direction of architect Manuel Méndez. The house is of some 2,305 square meters. A central courtyard serves as a meeting point and overflow point for events going on inside. Making maximum use of natural light, it opened in November of 1994 and averages some 6,000 visitors every month.

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
