Insurgentes Sur crosses Mexico City, north to south, for some 19 kilometers. It's an important avenue, and one that's easy to know well, as most of it is traversed by Metrobús Line One. It's counterpoint to the north is, perhaps obviously, Insurgentes Norte.
Named for the Ejército de los Insurgentes, the Army of the Insurgents who fought for Mexican Independence, the avenue was renamed from "Via del Centenario" during the administration of President Aleman (1946-1952).
From north to south, it crosses many of the City's most important central neighborhoods and colonias:
And in the very south, it arrives at Chimalcoyoc, one of the original settlements of Tlalpan.
Insurgentes Sur is too long to be walked, but it's lined with some of Mexico City's most inviting historical and cultural attractions.
