The Benito Juárez original settlements are some of the most central neighborhoods in the City. They're among those least known and least understood in Mexico City. Del Valle, along with many other central neighborhoods, is often thought to be "too new," too recent, or too modern to even be near its ancient predecessors.
While most of the area was lake bottom in the ancient period, it was studded with islands. The shores, one needs to imagine today, were lined with settlements, single houses, canoe docks, and even small villages.
As the colonial period advanced, the lake was gone. But these principle settlements remained. Even with Christian names appended, they recalled a history that was all too evident.
Exploring the alcaldía of Benito Juárez today means happening across these ancient original settlement. There are more than you might think.
