Portal Centro is a small shopping center just north of the iconic Avenida Lorenzo Boturini. It’s just a block or so west of the Canal de La Viga. For those walking, it can prove a welcome respite from the seeming endless neighborhoods of the center city.
Opened in 2017, it’s technically in the historic neighborhood of Transito just south of the Historic Center of Mexico City. The shopping center butts directly up against the INBAL Schools for Artisans and Design.
The shopping mall may have added some economic boost to the area long cut off from the booming Condesa-Roma neighborhoods to the west. With the decline of the La Viga area in the mid-20th century, the 110 shops here provide some sense of stability and rebound for the neighborhood. The mall provides a home to a number of chain restaurants, a cinema, and an array of shops and stores.
While food in the surrounding streets is undoubtedly more homemade, the Portal Centro offers air-conditioning and coffee and shade during the hotter months. It’s not the biggest shopping center, even in the center city, but it can be welcome respite for those lost or who’ve wandered over from the core Roma-Condesa area.
