Christmas Observances

Christmas in Mexico City is always something special. There are celebrations big and small, posadas, and observances of every stripe and character.  It's an important time of year.

Like in all of Mexico, it's also a season for family. Most Mexican families will consider the holidays an especially private and intimate time of year. That can leave some international visitors feeling left out. If you're not invited to the homes of friends or families, or you simply don't know anyone, take heart. It's a big city. There's always a lot going on.

Some will send you to the local government esplanades. Beyond the Zócalo, which is always decked out, the smaller alcaldías are spread all over the city. Each of them will be hosting its own official observances.

Mexico City shopping centers and shopping districts are another obvious choice for holiday revelry. Many of them stay open late, too.

But imagine a private holiday in some of the many small towns a little further afield in Mexico City. Original villages in Tláhuac, Milpa Alta, Tlalpan, and Xochimilco nearly all host similar town-center festivities. Imagine a tiny cozy hotel, and strolling the cobblestone streets. Some few may even get snow.

The sites below are some which have hosted the most important concerts, dinners, get-togethers and other observances for Christmas. Many have lasted weeks before and after the official holiday, but all have been well-remembered even years thereafer.
