San Juan de Aragon Area

Located to the northeast of the capital, a short distance from the airport, San Juan de Aragón is a territory of profound historical memory.

Its origins date back to 1435, when the area functioned as a lacustrine and fishing limit granted to the ancient town of Tlatelolco after the defeat of the Tepanec lordship of Azcapotzalco.

During the viceregal era, these lands were leased to the Sevillian Blas López de Aragón to found the Santa Anna Hacienda.

However, the settlement was formally consolidated in the mid-19th century—specifically in 1857—under the name of San Juan Crisóstomo Aragón, long before transforming into the immense urban polygon of subdivisions we know today.

Today, the greatest attraction in the area is the San Juan de Aragón Forest, consolidated as the second most important urban forest in Mexico City. This family space houses an extensive artificial lake, recreation areas, and a free-access zoo focused on wildlife conservation, offering a fundamental respite to both inhabitants and travelers exploring the metropolitan north.

The cultural vocation and urban rescue define the contemporary face of the demarcation.

A few steps from the wooded area stands the FARO Aragón, a dynamic audiovisual arts and crafts center that brought the historic Cine Corregidora back to life.

Those looking for industrial heritage can take a tour at the Museum of Railway Workers—installed in the old stone station of La Villa—while the award-winning Gran Canal Linear Park surprises the visitor with its avant-garde design, transforming an ancient riverbed into a pedestrian and cyclist walkway.

The route is enriched with the flavors and commercial dynamism of its neighborhoods.

Supply centers like the Town Market of San Juan de Aragón and the Romero Rubio Market are mandatory stops to taste traditional antojitos that preserve the authentic seasoning of this area.

Neighborhood life coexists in perfect harmony with modern complexes like Parque Tepeyac or Encuentro Oceanía, consolidating the area as a multifaceted, accessible destination full of surprises beyond its proximity to the runways of the Mexico City Benito Juárez International Airport.
