JO-HS

JO-HS is an exhibition space, artist residency and shop focused mostly on Mexican and Latin American art and design. Founded by Danish-born gallerist Elisabeth Johs, the space opened in November 2021. Johs had previously co-founded the gallery Trotter & Sholer in New York City. In Mexico City, the space is a slightly unusual domesticated mix of gallery austerity with living and residency space. That’s to say, there’s a bit more furniture.

The building was originally designed by architect, Carlos Herrera and completed in 1981. The architect’s main offices are on the same grounds.

Renovated and re-opened, today the space hosts bimonthly exhibitions. These have especially emphasized three-dimensional work, and importantly, the gallery has worked to support emerging and younger artists.

Johs also offers services in curation to other galleries, museums, real estate firms, and similar organizations. The gallery works closely with individual artists to bring more ambitious projects to light. The organization has worked with visual artists, musicians, chefs, and designers, and with many of them in unconventional, or at least, non-traditional locations.

In San Miguel Chapultepec‘s notoriously strident gallery scene, JO-HS has stood out. It’s not just a woman-led gallery in a macho world, but one that’s made a name for itself in a very short time.
