San Bernabé Ocotepec Ecotourism Park

The San Bernabé Ocotepec Ecotourism Park is a stunning natural reserve and recreation area. It was founded some 20 years ago as the Ocotepec Adventure Park in an effort to provide some of the same resources to area residents as are provided by parks in San Nicolás Totolapan and Magdalena Atlitic. Southwest of the town of San Bernabé Ocotepec, the park is a tribute to the many communities here.

The park can be considered an eastern extreme of Los Dinamos, a major and mountainous national park that with Desierto de los Leones, dominating much of southwestern Mexico City. The park ranges, at its lowest point, at 2,610 meters above sea level to some 3,150 meters at its highest point.

In the lower areas are recreation areas, a population of white tail deer, and parking areas. As visitors ascend, there are facilities to support mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, rappelling and even zip-lining. The lower extremes of the park also provide organized activities for the area’s seniors.

The park is home to rare teporingo rabbits, coyotes, and some varieties of owls and eagles. Foxes, snakes, raccoons, and squirrels more frequently make themselves known. Tall pine forests also shelter mushrooms, medicinal plants, and areas given over to reforestation programs. The La Peña lookout point, after a hike, provides outstanding vistas.

Hours: Monday,Tuesday, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
