The Parque de Tláhuac includes the park and plaza surrounding the main government building in San Pedro Tláhuac. It shouldn’t be confused with the much better-known Bosque de Tláhuac. The famous forest park is just about directly west of the town and alcaldía center, in San Pedro. The land between the forest and the town center consists nearly entirely of the chinampa fields for which the area is well regarded.
The present alcaldia building, at the very north of the plaza complex, replaced an older government palace. That building faces the San Pedro church. The Counselors’ Building (Edificio de los Concejales de la Alcaldía) also bears the name Antiguo Palacio de Gobierno.
The old building reminds us that, like many of the Alcaldía Esplanades, the center of local government here emerged from the old evangelization grounds of the church atrium. Today the historic San Pedro Fountain, in front of the church and across the street from the old palace, bears the painted glyph of Tláhuac. (It appears too as the symbol for the Tláhuac Metro station. That’s some 30-minutes walk to the north along the Avenida Tláhuac.)
Civic life in Tláhuac centers here. The esplanade, which includes the Parque de Tláhuac, is often the site of community celebrations. Concerts, informative events, and rallies will take up much of the interconnected plazas and surrounding areas. The market is directly to the south. The well-loved Regional Museum marks the eastern edge of the esplanade area.
