Mercado Iztacalco

The Mi Mercado Iztacalco is one of the most celebrated of central Iztacalco Public Markets. Virtually around the corner from the Church of San Matías, it’s been a must stop in the Barrio Asunción for decades. The market itself survives from the concentration of vendors crowded around this important intersection of La Viga Canal with the Canal de Tezontle bringing traffic from the east.

In 1908, a famous lock opened here for the raising and lowering of traffic between the two canals. The La Viga canal had ended up a bit higher than the lower Tezontle Canal making an elevator system necessary. It didn’t last long though. Within a few years the canal itself gave over to pavement and intubation. Vendors remained to sell, now more to the neighborhood. The La Viga canal itself was entirely paved over by the mid-20th century. Even today though, the Canal de Tezontle crosses all of Iztacalco, and even northwestern Iztapalapa, to connects with the farthest reaches of Agricola Oriental in the east. It’s long been a vital thoroughfare.

The historic market is a remnant and survivor of the long story of the canal and the people who traveled its banks and waters. And much of this part of Iztacalco still vibrates with the concentrations of that same commercial activity.

Inside the Mercado Iztacalco, you’ll find dozens of vendors. Many are women-owned businesses, and nearly all are independent small businesses. Money spent here contributes to the local economy. There are plenty of fresh-food eateries too. As a place for lunch, it’s one of your best bets. And after lunch, many will enjoy exploring the streets of the central Pueblo de Iztacalco.

Hours: Daily, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
