The Mercado Ignacio Zaragoza is the giant market for the neighborhood of the same name. Just north of the Metro Ciudad Deportiva station, the market is about the same distance south from Metro Gómez Farias. That station is named for the neighborhood just to its north and which also benefits from the market.
The market puts a proud face to the busy Avenida 8 that cuts across the neighborhood. But it’s likely the undulating façade on the market annex that stays in the minds of neighborhood kids their entire lives. The market opened in 1962 to a then very young and hopeful public. Three generations later, it’s just as hopeful. And the market has grown up along with the neighborhood.
Inside, you’ll find the variety of vendors. About 429 regular tenants make it one of the bigger public markets in this part of the City. And for international visitors, it can be a big change from eating in chain restaurants. Here you get prepared meals practically off the truck. Frozen food can’t really stand up to it for nutritional value and freshness. And you’re supporting smaller and women-owned businesses (and even farms!) while paying much less.
For airport layovers, or trips south to the giant Ciudad Deportiva, the Mercado Ignacio Zaragoza is a big plus. And it’s part of what’s made the neighborhood such a standout in the area.
