Hashtag Gallery was a Toronto gallery which made the leap and opened in Mexico City in the 2010s. Since then, it’s enlivened the art scenes in both cities. Energetic exhibitions span the range of popular art forms, leaning towards figuration, but nearly always with an air of graffiti, fashion, and nightlife at least breezing its way past.
The gallery opened in 2012 in Toronto and was frequently the recipient of reader’s choice awards for independent galleries there. They spent a freshman year in Mexico City in Condesa but moved to more permanent digs in Roma Norte some time later. In the thick of it, they picked up a stable of younger artists and ran with the momentum.
Crowded openings surround invested, engaging, and socially conscious exhibitions of art by Canadian, Mexican, and some international artists too. The energy is palpable.
Since moving, they’ve also expanded to include a number of important international art fairs in their annual rounds. These have included important art fairs right in Mexico City. The Hashtag Gallery survived the slow years of the pandemic as they’d already been deeply digitally connected even well before that became a standard necessity for all art galleries.
