The Bazar Iztapalapa is a legendary agglomeration of (mostly) restaurants, eateries, taco stands, and pizza places just off the Macroplaza in the Historic Center of Iztapalapa. It’s still centered around a small kiosko, i.e.; a gazebo, on the corner of the Calle Victoria.
More on the side of a lunch market, the Bazar practically butts, corner-to-corner, the 5 de Mayo market just around the corner. And in some sense, the Bazar acts as something of a food court for the smaller 5 de Mayo that focus more on produce and groceries.
Between the two markets is the Plaza del Mariachi. This fact nearly guarantees that any celebration within the Bazar is going to be accompanied by rather raucous music.
The Bazar is perhaps best known for the Marisqueria El Rocamar, a beloved seafood place. But there’s plenty of other menus to be chosen from. Somehow the Bazar Iztapalapa still keeps a somewhat touristy air. It might be the indoor-outdoor red plastic seating. Nearly every eatery offers the same styles of chairs, and these spill out onto all the surrounding patios. The Bazar has been part of the Center of Iztapalapa for generations. For those arriving from the Macroplaza or other points within the center, it can be a welcome and easy place to stop and eat.
Opening hours vary. Most of the market closes at 7 p.m. but a few places will be open later.
