Culhuacan Area

The Culhuacan Area in today's Iztapalapa is one of the oldest inhabited areas in Mexico City. For centuries, the town was on the eastern shore of Lake Texcoco. Even today, it's in the shadow of the giant Cerro de la Estrella.

Most visitors today will visit in tandem with a trip to the museum and archaeological site atop the old volcano. But the restoration of the Canal Nacional area to the west gives you even more reason to go.

Sandwiched between the extensive Canal Nacional and the Volcanos, ancient Culhuacan is starting to show up on lists of the best of Mexico City. Residents have long known; there's a lot here that's worth the trip. From a colonial monastery that continues to reveal its secrets, to a market right outside the Metro station, it's easy — and cool!
