Diplomatic relations between Brazil and Mexico were first established in the early 19th century. During the 1860s, the two countries were the only Latin American countries ruled by monarchs: Emperor Pedro II in Brazil and Emperor Maximilian I in Mexico.

Relations were suspended during the Mexican Revolution, but re-established in 1920. By 1922, both countries upgraded their diplomatic missions to full embassies. Today both countries are co-signers of multiple bilateral agreements. and have an important commercial relationship.
