Proyecto Paralelo

Proyecto Paralelo opened in 2012 as the Mexico City “parallel project” of the much-lauded galleria, Caja Negra, in Madrid. With a slate of artists there that ought to open eyeballs, the link between the two galleries remains strong. The Madrid gallery slate includes artists as prominent as John Baldessari, Joseph Beuys, Louise Bourgeois, and Antoni Tàpies. The Mexico City branch is much newer, but draws from the same deep well of late 20th and early 21st century expertise.

Exhibiting usually about four projects a year, these often coincide with art fairs and artistic events in Mexico City and around the world. These can include both the big Zona Maco art fairs, and even more fun, the Gallery Weekend events that invite everyone in, for free!

Perhaps as interesting as anything is Proyecto Paralelo’s curious neighborhood. The west side of Colonia Juárez can sometimes feel like Zona Rosa, and often like the north side of Condesa/Roma. It’s a quieter version of both, loaded with restaurants (and some night life) but it’s not exactly loaded with art galleries and revelers. While the west side of Juárez acts as a backyard and lunch neighborhood for the many offices along Paseo de la Reforma just to the north, it’s not nearly so up-and-coming as the east side of Juarez.

Saturdays: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
