Although formal relations between the two countries date only to 1944, with the signing of the NAFTA agreements in the 1990s the two countries have grown ever closer. The number of Canadians residing in Mexico has risen along with the number of Mexicans in Canada. Both countries are signatories to multiple trade agreements beyond NAFTA and follow-up agreements. Canada is just behind the USA and Spain in terms of the total amounts of investments in Mexico. And major Mexican companies have been doing business in Canada for decades.
