Mercado Juventino Rosas, Iztacalco

The Mercado Juventino Rosas is a classic neighborhood market in Iztacalco. Sections 1 and 2 of the neighborhood of the same name occupy a prominent place just about precisely in the middle of Iztacalco’s western, older section. And while streets and streets of homes seem to make up most of the area, the market breaks the monotony and provides a vital commercial center. The market also serves the Tlacotal Ramos Millan neighborhood immediately to the north.

  • José Juventino Policarpo Rosas Cadenas (1868–1894) was a composer and violinist most popularly known as Juventino Rosas. Born in Guanajuato, Rosas began as a street musician who later played with dance music bands. His compositions were mostly of salon music one of which was recorded and released in 1898 making it among the earliest recorded songs. His best known work is “Sobre las Olas” or “Over the Waves.” It remains popular as a waltz, but found its way into New Orleans Jazz, Bluegrass, Country Western and Tejano music. It was later released as a Wurlitzer fairground organ roll making it among the songs longest played and most widely recognized. Rosas died while on tour in Cuba at age 26.

For international visitors, the Mercado Juventino Rosas is a terrific place to discover. Lunches are served everyday. Prices make most travelers even happier. When you have lunch at any market in Iztacalco, you’re supporting local small businesses and farms. You’re also getting better food.
