X Espacio is one of those smaller commercial galleries that somehow feels much bigger. Almost lost in one of the canyon-like residential streets in the Colonia Noche Buena, it’s actually just off Insurgentes Sur. The gallery has somehow exhibited more than 100 artists in just over ten years in business. They’ve been hung in some 50 solo exhibitions and group shows over that same period.
They’ve focused on Mexican artists from all over Mexico, but also welcomed quite a number of international figures. The gallery has been a regular at Mexico City’s Material Art Fair, but they’ve found time for fairs in Buenos Aires, Bogota, Cartagena, Kuala Lumpur, Lima, Medellin, Tokyo, Toronto, Singapore, Hong Kong, and New York, too.
The gallery has also worked to be involved in criticism and research, developing an ongoing dialog that’s part of the overall process. They’ve worked with a number of curators in the development of new talent. Riskier projects rarely seen in commercial galleries actually do come about here. X Espacio is today maintaining a stable of some 15 Mexican and international artists. While that number may not seem like much, they’ve already done a lot while beginning with very little.
