Bosque de Nativitas

The Bosque de Nativitas is forest land that hosts the Madreselva Plant and Flower Market in Xochimilco. The two names are often used interchangeably. The truth is that the Bosque is a surprisingly well-maintained forest park that is only sometimes overrun by vendors, customers, and cars from the Market. On weekends, visitors from all over the City can converge to supply and get their gardens going.

While the market has plenty to offer, the forest park is much more in tune with the quieter side of life.  A few trails criss-cross the site, and horse riding is ubiquitous. It’s a popular site for picnics and get-togethers.

The forest is just a few blocks from the center of the Old Town of Nativitas. It used to be a mandatory stop for those touring Xochimilco’s canals. The church there was recently restored completely. The forest has long been an important part of the town. For those getting off the  Canal Boats, the natural impulse is to browse the many plants and gardening related goods being offered for sale. But don’t miss a chance to stroll through the trees and along the quiet lanes.

San Lorenzo Atemoaya, with its own tiny 18th century Baroque chapel is just south of the park along Calle Cuauhtémoc.
