Mercado Jardín Balbuena

The Mercado Jardín Balbuena is part of the giant and historic Unidad Kennedy housing complex in Venustiano Carranza. Well to the east of the neighborhood, it serves in equal parts as a commercial center, neighborhood meeting point, and a landmark within the crowded community. It’s roughly a 20-minute walk from the Mercado Unidad Kennedy, the other big market in the Balbuena neighborhood.  A historic third market is now the Super Issste grocery store on Avenida del Taller.

The market is technically in the third section of the Jardín Balbuena. It’s one of the biggest and home to thousands of residents. Many of them have been here for three and four generations, since construction of the Unidad Kennedy apartments began in the 1960s. Over all of that time, the neighborhood has changed dramatically. The once ubiquitous multi-family apartment buildings are today often in the shadow of even taller trees. And the pedestrian-only walkways between so many of the buildings mean that the neighborhood is surprisingly pleasant to stroll.

Within the market itself, you’ll find the gamut of products and services. Many have been renovated, upgraded, and improved. There are eateries preparing daily meals, and patrons showing up for those same meals. It’s a great place to eat, and roughly equidistant between Metros Gómez Farías, Moctezuma on Line 1, and Velódromo to the south on Line 8. Closest of all though is Metro Boulevard Puerto Aéreo.

Hours: Daily, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
