Loreto y Peña Pobre Ecological Park

The Loreto y Peña Pobre Ecological Park somehow always seems a bit smaller than it is. At a bit more than 21,000 square meters, it’s not tiny by any means. But sharing some history with the far great Bosque de Tlalpan, this one is a bit more modest.

The Peña Pobre park, as it’s locally known was set aside not as a forest reserve, but to preserve the water it provided to the factory. The Peña Pobre paper mill operated already in the 18th century. As it was later merged with the Loreto paper works, its history is often subsumed within the history of the important Loreto y Peña Pobre Paper Mill. Today, much of the complex is preserved within the Plaza Cuicuilco complex.

The park itself is bordered on one side by Insurgentes Avenue. As such, it’s literally surrounded by important points from the entire history of Tlalpan.

But for visitors, it’s just a very nice open green area. It’s also convenient to the Metrobús on Insurgentes and just across the street from the Crea Furniture Market.
