The Xochimilco original settlements are a series of recognized ancient towns. These surround the 17 barrios of the Xochimilco Center. But all are connected and each has a unique character and role in the history of southern Mexico City.
Some of these original villages are reachable by the canal boats for which Xochimilco is so famous. Some are a bit further afield.
Like all of Xochimilco, these are magical towns of a colorful, lakeside disposition. Many will still follow the ecclesiastical calendar inherited from the colonial period. That's when you'll see the processions in the streets and fireworks in the sky.
But like so much of Mexico City, each of the Xochimilco original settlements also offer a different chance at an entirely unique experience. The listings below should help you to see more of them.
