Galería Metropolitana (UAM)

The Galería Metropolitana is a 40-year-old university gallery run by the Autonomous Metropolitan University (UAM).  The site in Roma Norte opened in the 1980s with acclaim following a tribute to Rufino Tamayo. After four decades, the space is today dedicated to contemporary art from Mexico and abroad. On its walls have hung works by Miguel Covarrubias, José Luis Cuevas and Francisco Toledo, among many others over the  gallery’s long history.

The Metropolitana works to contribute to the discussion going on in contemporary art. They offer space to some of the youngest, as well as to well-known and established artists. As a university gallery in among many of the City’s most important commercial spaces, staff are also able to offer deeper and more educational exhibitions. These are in frequent dialogue with the surrounding community.

Colonia Roma’s gallery scene is among the most vibrant in the city, even as highly competitive galleries come and go. Having an institutional neighbor with a foot in the same game stabilizes what can be a raucous discussion. The Galería Metropolitana is also close to the Zona Rosa neighborhood.
