Casa de Cultura Tepecuitlapa

The Casa de Cultura Tepecuitlapa began as a community project to centralize cultural activities and opportunities by and for the people of San Bartolomé Xicomulco. It’s grown into the most important space for workshops, courses, job training, and language instruction in the town.

Always a celebration, the center opened just in 2010. By 2017, citizens had installed a solar panel system for nearly free electricity, and held some kind of event nearly every day of the year. Folkloric dance has been a particular area of pride for residents. For a small town, the center also supports a great deal of theater and performance-based projects.

The Casa de Cultura Tepecuitlapa is directly south of the town market. The two facilities share the same parking space. But as the market building closed during the 2020-2012 pandemic, merchants have moved most of their business into an outdoor tianguis. That’s probably strengthened the Casa’s position, as there’s now even more frequent foot traffic in and around the building. Many events take place out front in that same tianguis area.

The center is about 5-minutes walk west along Avenida 5 de mayo from the town center and church square.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Saturdays 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
