Mercado Insurgentes, Zona Rosa

The Mercado Insurgentes is a craft and artisan market in the Zona Rosa. It opened in 1955, long before most of the businesses in and around it. But don’t think “souvenirs.” Like the many artisan markets in the City, this one is loaded with actual art. You can get good quality wood carvings, textiles, and papier-mâché items of outstanding quality.

The market is pretty much smack in the middle of the Antiques District, just across from the Plaza del Angel. With the famous Saturday market there, the result is actually much higher quality and competition for better artisan works, even if they’re not always old.

The market also functions something like a traditional market, albeit for a not terribly traditional neighborhood. One of the best things about it is that it’s actually way bigger than it looks. From the entrance on Londres street, there’s very little indication of the size. What lies at the end of that entranceway corridor is much more like what you expect from a market.

For those staying in the Zona Rosa, the Colonia Cuauhtémoc or along the Paseo de la Reforma, the Mercado Insurgentes can be a life-saving last minute-stop. But even better, stop in early. There’s a terrific amount to browse or to plan on coming back for.

Hours: Daily 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., Sundays 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
