The Casa Gilardi is easily among the best-known architectural works of Luis Barragán. Having worked almost exclusively on residential projects, the house is that rare example that can actually be visited. Appointments are necessary but it’s among the most important, and rewarding, of House Museums in Mexico City.
The house is a showcase not just of Barragán’s exquisite sense of design, but especially of his sensitivity to color and texture. These have survived the architect as a legacy that has been imitated by nearly every designer since.
The Gilardi house was commissioned in 1975 by advertising executive Francisco Gilardi. At about 430 square meters, it’s a tremendous triumph and one in which Gilardi himself actively participated. The layout famously presents spaces one by one, as guests will discover. And light is filtered and reflected all along the way. Construction took place between 1976 and 1977.
A swimming pool in the living and dining area is just the most radical center to the house. It really must be visited. The experience is resonant, and leaves one wondering why every residence should not be this meticulously cared for.
Appointments to visit frequently sell out. Guests are reminded that the home remains a private residence. They’re encouraged to book some time in advance from the Casa Gilardi website.
