The Casa de Cultura Moderna is named for the neighborhood, rather than for any particular philosophical or historical outlook. Nevertheless, it’s one of the premier cultural centers in the City-Center . Drawing students and visitors, easily from nearby Iztacalco, in fact, many come from even much further away in the City.
Like many cultural centers in the City, this one also operates as a neighborhood and community center. It’s just around the corner from the Mercado La Moderna. So, it’s also conveniently located to the hub of neighborhood activity and commerce.
Opened in 1988, since then the Casa has gone on to develop ballroom dance course, ballet for kids, Middle-Eastern dancing, drawing and painting, Jazz for kids. It’s also a popular neighborhood fitness center. Courses include yoga, activities for seniors, and karate.
A remodeling completed in 2018 added an auditorium for 68 spectators, an elevator, three multipurpose rooms, terraces, two computer rooms, and a beloved roof garden. The center went from just one floor to three.
Visitors generally want to check out the gallery and exhibition spaces. These are numerous. As the neighborhood haunt for younger musicians and artists, there’s nearly always something going on. Facing the well-known Parque Moderna, it’s one of the most prominent buildings in the area. The Casa de Cultura Moderna is also cherished and respected institution, and the pride of neighbors and residents.
