Xochimilco Light Rail

The Xochimilco Light Railway is an excellent way to get to the famous Xochimilco Historic Center. International visitors will often consider the train a first leg on a trip to ride the famous canal boats known. But even many Mexico City residents don't realize that the historic train is last remaining tramway of the many that ran up and down the Calzada de Tlalpan from the mid-19th century through much of the 20th century. Many of Mexico City's original streetcar lines were abandoned in the 1960s and 1970s. That history is explored in depth at the Electric Transport Museum.

The current Tren Ligero de Xochimilco runs along the old routes 53 and 54, from Metro Tasqueña through to the San Pedro Tlalnáhuac neighborhood in Xochimilco.

The first modern light rail system began operating after the old streetcar lines were closed in 1984. After a few false starts, the new system began operating in 1986.

Since then, the service has operated as a continuation of Metro Line 2. The Metro had replaced streetcar service on the Causeway back in 1970. Today, the line runs through mostly placid residential neighborhoods, with an obviously very important stop outside the Azteca Stadium. But it also crosses history, legend, and many good stories. It's a journey through some of the best of Mexico City.
