Calle de Donceles

Calle de Donceles is easily one of the oldest streets in Mexico City. With the same name, it dates from way back in 1524, when it's believed to have been laid out.

Today it’s almost entirely known for the dozen-or-so used bookshops that line both sides of the street. Some of the most important out-of-print and hard-to-find books can still be found here. In fact, it's one of the best-known streets in the entire city, not for the bookshops, nor the camera shops that used to be here too. It's famous because its history goes back to the earliest days of the colonial period.

And with a history going that far back, it'd be negligent not to take a long look at what else has happened here. You can learn a lot more about each of these places through the entries listed below or simply by clicking on the map.
