martin carrera station logoMetro Martín Carrera is major Metro station in the City’s northeast. It’s also a transfer station between Line 4 and Line 6. Just east of the Basílica de Guadalupe, it’s sometimes too busy to really see. For the die-hard, it’s as fascinating as any terminal station in the city, with its mass of bus stops, scrambling commerce, and always something going on.

This Metro station opened as the northern terminal for Line 4 in 1981. In 1986, underground service began on line 6.

The station is named for a hero of the USA invasion and war, Martín Carrera Sabat (1806 – 1871). He served briefly as an interim president, but the neighborhood (for which the station is named) is named for the hero best remembered as an artillery commander. Carrera defended Mexico for nearly the entirety of the first half of the 19th century. He fought in three major battles during the US invasion.

Nearly in the shadow of the Cerro de Guerrero to the immediate north, Metro Martín Carrera is not often host to many international visitors. Buses from the CETRAM (Centro de Transferencia Modal) depart here for points mostly in Mexico State which is just a few kilometers further. The station is convenient to two neighborhood markets, those of colonia Martín Carrera to the north, and the Salvador Díaz Mirón market to the south.
