Mercado Jardín 23 de Abril

Mercado Jardín 23 de Abril

The Mercado Jardín 23 de Abril is a thriving neighborhood market in San Pedro Xalpa. The garden from which the market took its name was in turn named for the street just to the north. International Book Day is observed in many countries of the world on April 23rd.

The market is more than 50 years old. Like many public markets, it likely began as a tianguis before setting down permanent roots. Unlike lots of city markets though, this one occupies a series of elongated market buildings. The resulting corridors may even be easier to navigate than a giant central hall.

A 2017 UAM study counted some 158 merchants on the inside. That makes it a mid-sized market in crowded Azcapotzalco. The center of San Pedro Xalpa and the cemetery are about a 12-minute walk north and east from the market.

One of the original settlements of Azcapotzalco, Xalpa has long been a populous place. But here, that mostly means that food is prepared traditionally, from fresh ingredients, and time-honored recipes. This market maintains a pride-of-place in the neighborhood, with multiple vendors usually setting up outside. Inside though, there are a number offering sit-down service and daily special menus. It’s among the freshest food you’ll get anywhere.

The Mercado Jardín 23 de Abril offers a central location for those visiting any of the numerous cemeteries in the area. It’s roughly a 40-minute walk directly west of Metro Camarones and the Azcapotzalco Historic Center.

Hours: Daily, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
