Arte Abierto

Arte Abierto is one of Mexico City’s newest contemporary art museums. The frequent host of national and international contemporary art exhibitions, it’s also the setting for talks and workshops on art and architecture. Many of these are intended specifically for kids. Inside the ARTZ Pedregal shopping center, the organization running the center was founded just in 2019.

The mission of Arte Abierto is to create and disseminate cultural projects and to commission works of art. Many of these can be seen on the grounds of the ARTZ complex. The museum was designed along with the rest of the shopping center by the Grupo Sordo Madaleno. Guests enter through the second floor of the shopping center although they can also exit to the extensive gardens and walkways.

The center already hosts several permanently-installed works designed specifically for the site. These are by artists like Daniel Buren, Ai Weiwei, and Tania Candiani. But Arte Abierto is also involved in the placement of works at locations throughout the country. The record of exhibitions, even through the pandemic years, to today remains awe inspiring.

Arte Abierto also aims to provide significant space for artists and curators to develop ideas and experiments without having to adapt to the space. It’s quite big. And for that, the museum’s side focus on urbanism, architecture, and social experimentation are also well situated.

Hours: Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
