  • The name "Tamaulipas" comes from the Huastec language. "Tamaholipa" means "place of the high mountains."
  • The state is crossed by the Tropic of Cancer, and borders Texas (USA) to the north, and Veracruz and San Luis Potosí to the south. Nuevo León makes up most of its western border, and the Gulf of Mexico lies to the east.
  • The 2010 population was 2,268,554 inhabitants (INEGI), about 2.9% of the national population.
  • The state has abundant beaches and supports a strong seafood industry
  • The capital is Ciudad Victoria, but the biggest city is Reynosa.
  • Inland, much of the state's territory is dedicated to cattle and cotton cultivation.
