N.A.S.A.L. is an energetic and unusual contemporary art space in Roma Norte. Also known as Proyecto N.A.S.A.L., the name actually stands for the Nueva Asociación Sudamericana de Artistas Locos. That is, the New South American Association of Crazy Artists. Locos or not, their noses are not in the air. The space is inviting and usually adorned with gnawing, interesting works.
Perhaps most importantly, N.A.S.A.L. is nearly unique in providing exhibition space for South American artists within Mexico City’s vibrant art scene. The project began in Guayaquil in Ecuador. The Roma Norte branch is still something of an outpost for Ecuadorian artist Maureen Gubia. She began working there some 20 years ago as an artist.
The mission to support contemporary artists and dialogue brought her here in 2021. Since then, the project has consistently highlight South American artists and increased their profile across Latin America and beyond. The project has regularly participated in important art fairs in Latin America and the USA. And the Ecuador headquarters is still the main gallery.
Openings are always a major Roma Norte event. That’s even as the gallery maintains a rather modest profile most other nights. It’s an important spot for serious collectors and for those curious to always see something absolutely compelling.
