Zacatepec Park

The Parque Zacatepec is one of several to have benefited in recent years from renewed attention to the Sierra de Santa Catarina. A major chain of volcanos cutting across Mexico City’s south east, it’s been the focus of environmental and ecological efforts.

The park is just one small part of the protected natural land reserve. It joins the nearby Zapote Ecological Park, the Yecahuitzol park and the Yautlica Environmental Culture Center. The Center maintains some of its own extensive grounds as parkland.  Together they offer not just space for outdoor recreation and learning, but access to a unique eco-system.

At the end of the day, a lot of people will come to Zacatepec because the views are simply outstanding. At the top of this page is a view of the Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl volcanos far to the southeast of the City. They’re visible on any clear day. In the mid-distance is the Cerro del Elefante.

Zacatepec is a big, big protected area. That it might seem like a community center, or merely a neighborhood park, is part of what makes it so special. There are extensive trails and walkways, plus a few areas for picnics or simply for relaxing out of doors. It’s a place of vital importance to the City, and to the people living here on the slopes of Tetlalmanche.
