Mercado Panamericana

mercado panamericana
The Mercado Panamericana serves the broader Colonia Panamericana in Mexico City’s north. Like many of its surrounding neighborhoods, this one was carved out of the historic town of Santa María Magdalena de Salinas. As such, it shares much important history with the surrounding area. The neighborhood even hosts the Parish Church of the former town.

A 2017 UAM study counted some 427 merchants within the market proper. This number will vary by the season. But the number also indicates a good-sized market even by giant Mexico City standards. Amidst all of that buying and selling, there are a number of very good eateries. Mexico City markets, there are many, feed the entire City. They feed international visitors too.

While international visitors will want to sample the street food, tacos, and heavier fare, there’s no question that you can have too much of a good thing. The public markets, this one included, allow you to get sit-down service amidst some of the freshest food possible. While we don’t list individual restaurants here, one can rely on market vendors to offer the same, and even better food. Ingredients are impeccable. Prices are affordable. And you get friendly service while supporting independent and small businesses. Even farmers benefit when you go to the market.

The Mercado Panamericana is one of the City’s greats. Fresh food, friendly service, and a scale that means everyone gets to eat. Even everyday.
