Santa Rosa de Lima Church, Condesa

The Santa Rosa de Lima church is a Dominican church and landmark in La Condesa. Built between 1938 and 1944, the architectural style gets referred to as Neo-Baroque although it’s often referred to as eclectic, as it’s not really uniform. Clad in tezontle and quarried stone, the church rises over a Latin cross floor plan. It’s among the most elaborately decorated interiors in the area.

There’s a single nave, and a choir loft. Gilded altarpieces and figurative stained-glass windows lend a lot to the neighborhood. The transept is capped by a dome and an octagonal drum.

The parish is Santa Rosa de Lima. Born in Lima, she lived from 1586 to 1617. Her miracles were all performed in Peru and she was canonized by Pope Clement X in 1671. She’s remembered as the first Roman Catholic saint born in the Americas.

Artwork within the church commemorates the life of Santa Rosa, the Christ Child and Santo Domingo de Guzman, receiving the rosary of the Virgin Mary.

The entrance of the church is defined by two chapels. One is dedicated to the Lord of Wonders and Our Lady of the Angels and the other to Our Lady of the Rosary.
