Biblioteca Quetzalcóatl

Biblioteca Quetzalcoatl

The Biblioteca Quetzalcóatl is the central library of the Xochimilco alcaldía, which runs some 17 libraries across the area. The library’s thus also known as the Biblioteca Central and has been referred to as the Foro Cultural Quetzalcoatl too. It’s had several lives as a cultural center that’s drawn on some of the resources the library offers.

Part of the complex of alcaldía administrative buildings, it’s perhaps best known as a study center for kids from the central Xochimilco neighborhoods. Completely rehabilitated in 2022, the re-opened library today offers 30 computers with free internet, extensive Braille publications, and a unique collection of rare and antique books. There’s also a video library. The library also connects with an exhibition hall for cultural projects produced in cooperation with other area organizations. Perhaps, the library is best known for the extensive collection on the history of Xochimilco.

The complex containing the Biblioteca Quetzalcóatl was built during 1969. It’s closed only for brief periods since then. For international visitors, it’s one of the few places of interest in the broader complex of government buildings but it’s within easy walking distance of the central plazas and market that make Xochimilco such a dynamic place to visit.

Hours: Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., weekends: 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
