For Mexico City residents, Tlalpan is almost synonomous with the famous Bosque de Tlalpan nature reserve. A unique desert eco-system, today it's nearly surrounded by urban development. There's a lot to see and do in the area.
But Tlalpan is also, easily, the biggest alcaldía by area, of the 16 that make up modern Mexico City. A tremendous amount of that territory is protected as natural reserve and parkland. This protects diversity. It also helps keep the City supplied with clean air and water.
It's a vast territory of small rural towns. It's crossed by the famous Cuernavaca Railroad Bikeway. There are also smaller city plazas and urban parks. And Tlalpan, like so much of Mexico City, is simultaneously new and very ancient. It's that antiquity that we sense in the forest and the volcanoes.
The system of parks and reserves make it easier to connect with a common past, even one that's very old indeed. And visiting will show you how much there is to be treasured even with a simple stroll through the woods.
