Teatro Santa Catarina

El Teatro Santa Catarina  is located in one of the lots adjacent to the Jardín de Santa Catarina, in downtown Coyoacán and was born from the initiative of actress Olga Martha Dávila, set designer Alejandro Luna and Gabriel Sotres, who shared the idea of creating a scenic space on this site.

The forum was built in 1970 according to a design by Alejandro Luna and was initially called Teatro Coyoacán, Escenario de Arte. It was later rented to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and later became part of the scenic space patrimony of this educational institution.

The first performance was “Lástima que sea puta”, by director Juan José Gurrola, with scenery by Alejandro Luna and actors Vera Larrosa, Gabriela Araujo, Roberto Ballesteros, Hugo Gutiérrez Vega and Juan José Gurrola. The theater was remodeled and reopened on March 30, 2001 with the play “Frankenstein”, by Mary Shelley with scenery and direction by Juliana Faesler.
