Embassy of Lebanon in Mexico City

The Embassy of Lebanon in Mexico City is Lebanon’s diplomatic seat in the country. Lot’s of visitors don’t realize that immigration from the middle eastern country has been a major factor, in Mexico, for at least 100 years. Some half-million Mexicans consider themselves to be of Lebanese descent. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have long considered these people when making decisions regarding the interests of the two countries.

Mexican-Lebanese diplomatic relations began with Lebanon’s independence from France in 1945. Since then, the two countries have maintained embassies in both countries respectively, except for 14 years between 1982 and 1996 during the Lebanese Civil War.

Both countries are parties to a number of high level trade and bilateral agreements. The Lebanese Embassy is especially focused on providing consular services. These include services for Lebanese citizens in Mexico, and for those wishing to stay for extended periods in Lebanon. They also assist the descendants of immigrants in reclaiming citizenship.

The importance of the Embassy of Lebanon in Mexico, and thus, of relations and history shared by the two countries, is also reflected in the naming of the park out front. The Parque Líbano, out front of the embassy, is perhaps just the most prominent tribute to the Lebanese people of Mexico. The Lebanese Maronite church maintains a prominent cathedral in the City Center. Images of Saint Charbel Makhlouf are ubiquitous in many parts of the City. He’s a strong indicator you’re in the neighborhood of Mexicans who trace their past back to Lebanon.
