Located in the Benito Juárez borough, this sports complex is part of the architectural and historical heritage of Mexico City. Its location on one of the most important arterial roads in the demarcation guarantees unbeatable access both by private car and through an extensive public transport network.
Built to host the aquatic and indoor disciplines during the Mexico 1968 Olympic Games, this venue is a true feat of modern Mexican engineering. The Olympic Pool is named after Francisco Márquez in honor of the youngest of the Niños Héroes (Boy Heroes), standing out for its avant-garde undulating roof supported without central columns. For its part, the Juan de la Barrera Gymnasium impresses with its innovative suspended roof system, which allowed the construction of an open space free of visual obstacles more than 80 meters long.
Both spaces represented the vision of modernity that Mexico projected to the world at the end of the 1960s. During the Olympic joust, the pool was the stage where the best swimmers and divers on the planet broke historic records, supported by a water climate control system that was a pioneer in its time. At the same time, the gymnasium vibrated with the exciting qualifiers and finals of the volleyball discipline.
In the decades following the Olympic event, the complex evolved to consolidate itself as the indisputable seedbed for high-performance athletes. Its facilities have been kept at the forefront, housing warm-up pools, diving pits with 10-meter platforms, and floors adapted for gymnastics, basketball, and combat sports.
Today, this multifunctional complex keeps its doors open to both elite athletes and the general community, promoting health and massive sports.
How to get there: The Eje Central station (Metro Line 12) is a few blocks’ walk away. Additionally, Trolleybus Line 3 (which runs along Eje 7 Sur) has a stop that drops visitors right in front of the sports complex facilities.
