The Capilla de Juramentos, the Chapel of Promises, or perhaps, of Solemn Promises, is an important stop for lots of visitors to La Villa. It’s dedicated especially to vice, to stopping feelings of guilt, and failure. Negative behaviors confront lots of people, and this little chapel is where people seek divine intervention. By promising, to God or to the Virgin Mary, many of them find that they can, at last, lead better and more responsible lives.

Some will come and promise for ten days, and then come again. Of course, there are success stories. And there are people who will come again and again.

People who suffer from addictions don’t look out on a world with a lot of options for helping them. Many believe that without making such promises, they certainly won’t succeed.

In any case, it’s a curious and noteworthy place. In today’s secular age, the Capilla de Juramentos receives a tremendous amount of traffic.
