The Mexico City Airport Layover will assure you of one thing: an airport is no place to spend 12 hours. (It's marked red on the map.) That's especially true when the airport is practically in the center of one of the most vibrant cities in the world.
Your plan doesn't have to be to see as much as you can. Here's a few different options, and there's a lot to pic from:
2. The airport is just minutes from the San Lázaro area. That's at the south of the giant Gran Canal Park and it brushes up against the enormous Aragón Forest and Zoo. Both are new, or at least, newly renovated.
3. Even closer, Mexico City's Sports City includes stadiums and giant sports facilities, But it's also a wide open park of playing fields, swimming pools, and, yes, trees and green areas.
Long time travelers, though, will want to send you direct to the very center of the city. You can do that too.
4. The Zocalo, the city's main plaza, is about 25 minutes from the airport in a taxi. It might be faster by Metro, (though you'll need to change trains at least once). It's a big vibrant area. And there's almost no limit to the number of things you can see and do. There's further information on the City Center, here.
