Lienzos Charros

The lienzos charros of Mexico City are official venues strategically distributed in different parts of the capital, from the west in the Chapultepec area to the residential circuits of the south and the traditional north of the city. These venues are rural enclosures embedded in urban modernity, designed specifically for livestock handling and equestrian practice.

The lienzos are the heart of charrería, the national sport par excellence that was declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2016. The capital has about 30 lienzos where riders and escaramuzas keep the nine traditional routines (suertes, such as piales, manganas, and the paso de la muerte) alive to the amazement of the local and foreign public.

The Lienzo Charro Constituyentes, home of the historic National Association of Charros, is one of the most important in the country. It is fully roofed, has a capacity for 5,000 spectators, and is distinguished by offering free Sunday charreadas to the general public. Its accessibility has improved significantly thanks to its proximity to the new Cablebús station, making it easier for tourists to arrive.

For its part, the Lienzo Charro del Pedregal, located in the south of the city, stands out for its exclusive atmosphere surrounded by nature. This venue houses the well-known restaurant “Terraza El Ruedo,” where you can enjoy typical Mexican breakfasts while watching the riders’ training and skill live during the weekends.

Towards the north, the Lienzo Charro de La Villa is known as the “Cathedral of charrería in Mexico” due to its profound historical legacy. It has a traditional ring with a capacity for 700 spectators. In addition to its sporting activities, this venue has specialized heavily in organizing rustic weddings and large-scale banquets, taking advantage of the beauty of its multiple halls and country gardens.

How to get there: For the Lienzo Charro Constituyentes, the Constituyentes station (Metro Line 7) and Cablebús Line 3 are ideal. For La Villa, the Indios Verdes and Deportivo 18 de Marzo stations (Metro Line 3 and Metrobús Line 1) are the best option. For the Lienzo del Pedregal, it is suggested to arrive at the Perisur station (Metrobús Line 1) and complete the approach trip by official or app-based taxi.
