Azcapotzalco Historic Center

The heart of the borough guards the legacy of the ancient Tepanec empire in an environment where neighborhood life unfolds.

Starting the tour at the Jardín Hidalgo allows you to delve into the tree-lined main square that functions as the social core of the demarcation.

The space houses the iconic ant statue and the foundational monument, elements that pay homage to its Nahuatl name, which means "in the anthill."

Facing the square stands the Parish and Ex-Convent of the Holy Apostles Philip and James, a 16th-century architectural jewel founded by the Dominican order.

The Plateresque facade and the bell tower dominate the landscape, guarding the famous legend of a small ant engraved in the stone that, according to the inhabitants, climbs slowly, announcing the end of the world upon reaching the top.

Crossing the street leads directly to the Casa de Cultura de Azcapotzalco, located in the old neoclassical-style Municipal Palace building.

Inside is the historic Fray Bartolomé de las Casas Library, a venue inaugurated in 1925 that safeguards a treasure of national art: the mural Paisaje de Azcapotzalco (Landscape of Azcapotzalco).

Painted in 1926 by a young Juan O’Gorman at just 21 years old, this piece represents the first mural of his brilliant career, masterfully illustrating the territory's transition from its rural and lacustrine past to the beginnings of the industrial era.

The historical journey continues towards the Chapel of San Lucas Atenco, a 17th-century building whose Nahuatl name translates as "on the water's edge," recalling the ancient geography of the lakes.

Visiting this single-nave viceregal temple invites you to appreciate its sober quarry stone facade, consolidating itself as a living testimony of early evangelization.

Finally, walking through the surroundings allows you to discover corners of great romanticism like the Callejón del Beso (Alley of the Kiss), a quiet cobblestone walkway—flanked by old mansions—that offers the perfect closure for those looking to enjoy an urban stroll.
